No Troops on Our Docks! Blowing the whistle on SSA . . .
Over 300 West Coast Longshore workers and community supporters rallied together on September 18th to protest against efforts of Stevedoring Services of America (SSA) to sabotage their contract negotiations. Stevedoring Services of America (SSA) controls the largest block of votes on the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) bargaining committee, which sets the agenda for contract negotiations. Additionally, as the largest stevedoring company in the nation, SSA is perhaps the most important reason why negotiations are currently stalled. Longshore workers up and down the West Coast have been working without a contract since July 1st, and the PMA has not made any acceptable proposals, especially in the area of job security. The SSA is working to build a competitive advantage over other stevedore companies within the PMA by creating fictive business identities that outsource ILWU longshore work to use non-union labor.
